Roof drainage correction in St Albans & Melbourne's west
When box gutters, rain heads or sumps can't keep up, the water ends up inside. We work out why the roof isn't draining and correct it, not just patch the spot that leaked.
What's involved
Water in, water out.
Box gutters sit inside the roof line, so when they block, rust or overflow there's nowhere for the water to go but in.
Box gutters run between roofs, behind parapets and along walls on terraces, townhouses and a lot of modern designs. They drain into rain heads or sumps, which feed the downpipes. Every part of that chain has to carry what the roof sheds in a heavy downpour, or the weakest link overflows.
The usual faults: box gutters with too little fall, so water sits and rusts them out; sumps and outlets too small for the roof area; overflows that are missing or blocked; and joins that have opened up over time.
Correcting it can mean a new box gutter with proper fall, bigger sumps or rain heads, overflows added so water spills outside instead of in, or rethinking where the water goes. We explain what's wrong and what will fix it before any work starts.
- Box gutters rebuilt with proper fall
- Rain heads and sumps sized for the roof
- Overflows that spill outside, not in
- Flashings where the box gutter meets walls and sheets
Before we quote
Roof drainage correction: what we look for.
What tells us this is the right job for your roof, and what we check before we price it.
Signs your roof isn't draining
- Stains along an internal wall or under a parapet
- A rain head or sump overflowing in storms
- Rust or standing water in a box gutter
- Damp ceilings near valleys and box gutters
What we check
- Fall along the box gutter
- Sump and outlet size against the roof area
- Whether there is a working overflow
- Joins, flashings and the sheets either side
How the job runs
From first look to final clean-up.
-
Step 1: Look at how it drains
We follow the water from the roof sheets through the box gutters, sumps and rain heads to the downpipes.
-
Step 2: Find the limit & quote
We work out which part can't keep up and quote the correction, not just a patch.
-
Step 3: Correct it
New box gutter, bigger sumps or rain heads, overflows, or a new layout, as the roof needs.
-
Step 4: Water test & clean-up
We run water through to check it drains the way it should, then clear the site.

What is a box gutter?
A box gutter is a gutter built into the roof rather than hung off the edge, running between two roof sections, behind a parapet or along a wall. Because it sits inside the building line, any overflow goes into the building, which is why its fall, size and overflows matter so much.
Why does my box gutter overflow in storms?
Usually because the water arrives faster than it can leave: not enough fall, a sump or outlet too small for the roof area feeding it, debris at the outlet, or no overflow to take the excess. We check each of those and fix the one that is actually limiting it.
Do I need an overflow on my box gutter or rain head?
Yes. An overflow is what lets water spill somewhere harmless when the outlet can't keep up or gets blocked. Older roofs often don't have adequate ones, and adding them is one of the simplest drainage corrections.
Can a box gutter be replaced without replacing the roof?
Often, yes. The sheets on each side are lifted back enough to get the old box gutter out and the new one in, then re-fixed and flashed. If those sheets are rusted too, we'll tell you and price that section as well.
